At St Joseph’s, we are committed to providing a strong foundation in early reading, recognising that it is a crucial skill for lifelong learning and academic success.  We follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised systematic synthetic phonics programme.  Our approach to teaching early reading is based on a structured, evidence-based programme that fosters a love of reading, supports linguistic development, and builds essential skills in decoding, fluency, and comprehension.

We believe in the importance of a balanced approach that incorporates both systematic phonics instruction and opportunities for reading enjoyment.  Our primary aim is to ensure that all children, regardless of background or ability, develop the confidence and skills to read fluently and independently.  We pair our daily Little Wandle phonics sessions with multiple reading sessions each week.

Teachers will provide targeted support, intervention, and enrichment to ensure that every child receives the attention they need to progress at their own pace.  We also encourage active parental involvement, recognising that early reading is most effective when supported both at school and at home.

Through our approach, we aim to instil a love for books and stories, fostering curiosity, imagination, and critical thinking.  We want our pupils to see reading not only as a skill to be mastered but also as a window to the world, expanding their understanding, empathy, and knowledge of the diverse cultures and experiences around them.

By the end of Key Stage 1, we aim for every child to have the ability and confidence to read a range of texts fluently and with comprehension, laying the groundwork for a successful journey through their education.

Our Phonics subject leader is Rachel Sutcliffe.
