At St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, our goal is to develop an engaging and challenging Design and Technology curriculum that enables children to build a broad range of knowledge and skills, which they can apply in a wide variety of real-world situations. We aim to inspire our students, providing them with the tools and skills they need to succeed in life. By encouraging them to solve relevant and meaningful problems across different contexts, we equip them with critical thinking and problem-solving abilities that are essential for their future.

Our pupils are encouraged to harness their creativity and imagination, using design thinking to create and produce their own products while considering the needs, wants, and values of themselves and others. Design and Technology projects at St Mary’s are multidisciplinary, integrating subjects such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing, and art. This holistic approach ensures that students not only develop technical skills but also learn how to think innovatively and practically across various fields.

Through hands-on projects, children learn how to take calculated risks, becoming resourceful, enterprising, and capable citizens. Our curriculum teaches students to critically analyze and evaluate both historical and modern-day design and technology, helping them to understand its impact on daily life, society, and the wider world. This critical understanding fosters an awareness of how design and technology shape culture, innovation, and well-being. At St Mary’s, we aim to nurture students who will be adaptable and prepared to thrive in an ever-changing global landscape.

By exposing children to high-quality design and technology education, we make a vital contribution to their creativity, problem-solving abilities, and future success. Our curriculum encourages students to become thinkers, creators, and innovators who are equipped to make meaningful contributions to society. We recognize that preparing our students for the rapidly evolving world requires not only the development of practical skills but also the ability to adapt and apply these skills in new and innovative ways.

Our Design and Technology curriculum is carefully based on an adapted model of the Early Years Framework and the National Curriculum. To ensure that every child reaches their full potential, we have implemented progression documents that guide the development of the skills needed to meet the Key Stage objectives of the National Curriculum. Our long-term plan is both broad and balanced, allowing children to practice and experience a wide variety of skills through diverse and exciting projects.

At St Mary’s, we are committed to providing a curriculum that is rich in opportunities for exploration, creativity, and critical thinking. By the time our pupils leave, they will have gained a wide array of skills, a deep understanding of the impact of design and technology, and the confidence to apply their knowledge to new challenges, preparing them to be the innovators and problem-solvers of tomorrow.
