Our Parish

At St Joseph’s, we are deeply blessed by the strong and vibrant connections we share with our parish community. We believe in fostering a sacred bond between home, parish, and school.

Our Lady and St. Joseph’s Heywood is a vibrant parish community which strives to live-out the gospel message in our day-to-day lives. Whether you are a visitor, or a new parishioner settling into  the parish, please do make an effort to introduce yourselves. We very much want our Church to be open and welcoming to all!

Our parish life is every bit as varied as our town with times of prayer and to meet together, parish groups involved in outreach and service of the poor at home and abroad, three great schools, and much much more.

Our Church

We are fortunate to have our beautiful parish church nearby, enabling us to visit for school Masses, enhance our RE lessons, and join in parish celebrations.

The church is a brick basilican Romanesque design of the early twentieth century by Oswald Hill, with an austerely handsome arched interior enhanced by rich decoration in the sanctuary and transepts. The mission at Heywood was founded from Rochdale in 1855. In 1856 a church, school and presbytery were built in Dawson Street. The mission continued to grow and after the appointment of Fr Poole in 1898 discussions began about a new and larger church. The foundation stone of the present building was laid on 13 October 1913 and it was completed in 1916.
