At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, our intention is to create an inspiring and enriching Art curriculum that nurtures creativity, self-expression, and critical thinking in every child. We believe that art is a vital form of communication and personal expression, enabling students to explore their ideas, emotions, and the world around them. Our aim is to provide children with a broad range of artistic skills and techniques that they can apply across different mediums, while fostering an appreciation for art in its many forms and cultural contexts.
Through our Art curriculum, pupils will develop their technical abilities in drawing, painting, sculpture, and other creative disciplines, while learning how to analyze and critique artwork—both their own and others’. Children will be encouraged to use their imagination and creativity to produce their own works of art, inspired by a diverse range of artistic movements, styles, and cultures. By exploring the works of both historical and contemporary artists, they will develop a deeper understanding of art’s influence on society and its role in shaping human experience.
At St Joseph’s, we believe that Art plays a crucial role in developing confidence, resilience, and self-reflection. Our curriculum encourages children to take risks, experiment with different techniques, and learn from their mistakes, fostering a growth mindset that values the process of creation as much as the final outcome. We aim to create an inclusive environment where every child’s artistic voice is valued and celebrated.
By offering a wide variety of opportunities for creative exploration, we prepare our pupils to view the world with a critical and artistic lens, equipping them with the skills and confidence to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Our Art Subject Leader is Polly Ward.
